What made you want to get into music?
“It’s really the only thing I have ever wanted to do. There really wasn’t one thing in particular that made me want to start singing or making music. It’s just part of my DNA. It’s like breathing to me.”
What is your favorite song to cover?
“There is actually one right now I’m working on that I’m pretty psyched about… but I never reveal what my covers are until I upload them! Of the ones I’ve already done, I actually really like what I did with ‘Inside Out’ by Britney Spears and the video in your cover wars for ‘Payphone’.”
You had so much support for your ‘Payphone’ cover during our Cover Wars, is there anything you’d like to say to your fans for that?
“I would like to say that my fans are AMAZING and a HUGELY vital part of my success. I have seen more opportunities coming my way and my music spreading even more – and that is largely because of my awesome fans constantly spreading my name. I don’t really know if fans understand just how important they are to an artist. They literally give you a career. And I also have to give a special shout out to my fans in France for really spearheading the vote for me in this cover war. Merci beaucoup!”
When you play shows, do you tend to do more covers or more original pieces?
“I’ve played quite a bit of shows this year and they mainly consist of my originals (my album is on iTunes). But I usually throw in 2 or 3 covers.”
Are there any musicians inspire you to keep on playing music?
“Any musician that I see unashamedly being who they are and writing from a deep place inside of them inspires me. Fiona Apple for example – she never holds back and puts it all out there for everyone to hear. Her songs are unconventional but amazing because they really capture the essence of her individuality.”
Will you tell us a little bit about your new album?
“Well, I’m currently working on my second album… but I can’t tell you about that just yet 🙂 My debut album that I released earlier this year is the result of me being back home in Iowa for a solid year focusing on nothing but creating music. I didn’t put any pressures on myself and fully just allowed for anything to come out.”
Do you have a favorite song off it?
“I actually really like the opening song ‘Red’, which is an instrumental track. But I also love ‘Place Of Paradise’ and ‘Undone’. I love ‘Undone’ because it was one of those songs that I literally wrote in one sitting and it came out of me so effortlessly and naturally. I love when that happens.”
Do you have any touring plans in the near future?
“I do but I’m still in the process of confirming things… So I can’t spill the beans just yet! But will always keep everyone up to date on my Facebook fanpage and twitter!”
If you could play with anyone dead or alive who would it be?
“I would actually love to do a duet with Adele. A huge ballad. She’s phenomenal and I think we could do something really great together.”
