Interview with Artist of the Week: Skyler

Skyler is a young new artist from York, Maine. He has a pop-rock sound mixed with a little country. Skyler‘s been nominated for Best New Act by the New England Music Awards, selected to have his song, “Stephanie,” to be used in a radio campaign for Supercuts and is an artist representative for Shoutz (explained a little more in the interview).

Skyler was also featured on the popular talent show, the X-Factor(9/27).

Describe your music in a few words.

“The most fun you’ll have sitting down while listening to a York, ME native play guitar.”

What has the fan reaction been to your latest EP, Take You Away?

“It has been overwhelmingly positive. I have the best fans in the world. They are incredible loyal and supportive. I’m very exciting to start working on my next release which will be in Spring 2013.”

Did you ever think you’d be nominated for Best New Act of the Year by the New England Music Awards? What was going through your head when you found out you were?

“It was an honor to be nominated. It was very exciting when I found out, especially since I found out from a fan via Twitter. I had to go to the website and look up the nominees just to be sure!”

When did you start playing music? What’s your favorite part about performing?

“I’ve been playing music as long as I can remember. My favorite part is getting out in front of people, leaving everything on the stage, and giving the fans a night that they’ll never forget.”

Your song, “Stephanie,” is going to be used for Supercuts, tell us how you got involved with that “radio campaign?”

“Supercuts was looking for 12 artists to be part of their latest radio campaign. Out of several thousand submissions, I was selected as one of the 12. It’s been so cool hearing from fans all around the country saying they heard my song on the radio or Pandora.”

Tell us a little about Shoutz.

“Shoutz is a brand new social media platform that allows you to automatically post 15 seconds video. It’s like video Twitter!”

Who or what is your biggest inspiration?

“The Beatles. Without them, I never would’ve decided to become a musician.”

Your music is pretty popular in your local area, any big plans coming up to expand your music to a larger population?

“I’m going to spend the winter focusing my energy on all of the major New England markets, starting with Boston, Hartford, Portland, Burlington, Providence, and Manchester. By summertime, we will be branching out beyond New England and taking America by storm! ;-)”

If you could collaborate with any artist (dead or alive) who would you choose?

“Right now, my answer would be Taylor Swift or Ed Sheeran. They’re both creating such great, new, exciting music. It’s no surprise they’ve collaborated together!”

You have a few upcoming shows for the end of fall early winter, where are you most excited to play?

“I’m very excited to play with Ryan Cabrera in Portland on 10/25. I’ve played with him before and he is an incredible performer. It’s going to be a lot of fun!”

Anything else to say to fans or new potential fans?

“Thank you so much for your support!”

Since we’re called “Honest Reviews Corner,” what’s your honest review on tube socks?

“They’re back. It’s time to hike up your sucks, cuff up your jeans, and show those babies off!”
