‘Supernatural’ Recap — Episode 8.12, “As Time Goes By.”

01

Last night’s episode of Supernatural was a doozy, and a potential game-changer if it plays out how it looks like it will—the Winchester bloodline is just getting crazier and crazier.

The joke kind of makes itself.
The joke kind of makes itself.

It started right off with the past, before jumping into the future. That is, John Winchester’s father apparently knew the secrets to time travel, and jumped a little too far past hope of meeting his son at a later time, skipping right to 2013 and finding Sam and Dean instead. And jumping out of their motel closet.

Chaos ensues, predictably, but after everyone calms down and figures out what’s going on, Henry (grandpapy Winchester) explains that there’s a big bad demon on the loose—one so big and bad that Ruby’s knife hardly slowed it down at all. And that, apparently, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, even if it doesn’t know that the tree is involved in a ton of supernatural mumbo-jumbo. Apparently the Winchester line was made up of “Men of Letters,” or the keepers of all the supernatural information that humanity compiled. Who knew, right?

A demon hunt happens while the Winchesters attempt to track down the whole Men of Letters thing and figure out where they can get more information about all this…information. Sam hunts down a previous member and gets a mysterious location where he’s supposed to take a mysterious box, but then gets kidnapped by the big bad demon and Dean has to come rescue him.

Seriously, these Winchesters just drop like flies.
Seriously, these Winchesters just drop like flies.

And, since this is Supernatural and Winchesters have a notoriously short life span, we say goodbye to Granddaddy Winchester during the fight…and hello to a potential source of information that might change the course of the show forever. A big part of Supernatural has always been figuring out how to defeat the brand new Monsters of the Week…so what will happen when/if the brothers get their hands on a library of this stuff?

A more pro-active approach, perhaps. Or maybe they’ll just stick with the tried-and-true, “We just seem to be missing this one bit of information” approach.

Only time will tell.
