Album Review: Allison Weiss ‘Remember When’

Allison Weiss — the Powerpop foursome out of Flowery Branch, Georgia — have just dropped their latest release Remember When via No Sleep Records.

The five output EP sets the tone early with the title track ‘Remember When’ — a dose of nostalgia that will have listeners strolling down memory lane. Though the track is chalk-full of shimmering sounds, this journey into the past is not all rainbows and roses. There is a sense of loss that echoes throughout, driven home by Weiss’ lamenting vocals — straddling the fine line between revel and regret.

‘Giving Up’ is considerably more up-tempo, with shades of early Paramore and modern-day Tonight Alive. While the lyrics are somewhat repetitive and one-note, the instrumentation is a definitive draw — the layered melodic elements lending to the overall airy ambiance.

Remember When is a melodic journey through the melancholy that showcases Allison Weiss at their best. From the re-imagined rendition of Robyn’s ‘Call Your Girlfriend,’ to the old-time revival of ‘Take You Back,’ its but a glimpse into the reservoir of potential that resides in each of these truly talented musicians. Whether by default or by design, the painful look into the past that Remember When offers puts Allison Weiss on a path toward a bright future.
