Fans fell in love with Steward Amy Johnson on Season 2 of Bravo’s Below Deck. Fortunately, she decided to return for another season! Read our interview with Amy below. We discuss season 3, Chef Ben’s return and the absence of Kelley.
How does this season compare to last season for you?
The main difference for me this season compared to last season, is that my brother Kelley, is not a member of the crew. He is one of my best friends, was such an encouragement and pillar of strength for me last season; so I was nervous doing it again without him.
What have you’ve been up to in between the seasons?
Thankfully, I was able to take some much needed time off! I spent most of that time off traveling, visiting friends and family, and getting some quality rest and relaxation in! I also still stay active in the yachting community, I did several freelance trips on various yachts in between the seasons.
What made you want to return after such a crazy first season?
Crazy, right? Ha. It’s a strange thing, once this industry gets in your blood, it’s hard to leave it behind. Also, there was a big part of me that wanted a second go at it, a chance to do again after learning some important lessons during season two. I was able to enjoy it more this time around, I’m really glad I was part of season three!
Had you met anyone else in the crew before this season in your prior yachting experience?
Besides my brother who was a part of season two, I had not met anyone in the crew before we started filming.
When were you told who the rest of the crew would be? What was your reaction?
They love to keep us on our toes, so we don’t actually find out who the crew is until we’re literally getting on the boat to start the season, which is true to form in the industry. I was excited to see Captain Lee and our mate Eddie. I had mixed feelings when I learned Kate would be my chief stew. On one hand I was relieved, she’s great at her job. On the other hand, we had some disagreements last season and I was hesitant to work with her again because of how things went between us. I just went into it with an open mind hoping we could start a new chapter and work well together.
What is the one thing that you can’t find on a yacht that you wish you could bring?
I wish I could stuff a reflexologist in my suit case and keep them in a bilge to massage my feet after each day. Running around on a mega yacht, non-stop, 16 hours a day; your feet literally hate you. There are times it seems physically impossible to run a drink up 3 flights of stairs for the 500th time that day… but if I had a reflexologist onboard my dogs wouldn’t bark so loud.
What do you do when you’re not on a yacht?
When I’m not on a yacht or traveling, I cherish the simple joys of being home and spending time with friends and family. I love to have people over; whether it’s for dinner, game night, or just hanging out at the house. I treasure the time spent with good people, having great conversations, and “doing life together.”
What’s the best yacht you’ve ever worked on?
If I had to pick one, it’d be motor yacht ‘Pipe Dreams.’ She’s a beauty, and has sentimental value to me because I love the family that owns it.
What’s your favorite place you’ve ever been to by yacht?
Man. I don’t think I can pick just one!!! My favorite “work perk” is that we get to travel to incredible destinations, experience different cultures, and explore new places. My top three favorite places… St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands, Harbor Island in the Bahamas, and Anguilla which is in the Caribbean.
What charter/episode are you most excited for fans to see?
I am really excited for fans to see Chef Ben’s return! He is a legendary chef, everyone loves him, and he brings such a fun energy to our crew! I’m looking forward to reliving that with viewers.
Since our site is called Talk Nerdy With Us, what do you “Nerd out” about?
I’m a total nerd at heart… I have a weakness for video games. My brother and I use to spend hours playing Nintendo while growing up. I actually still have my original NES… And when I get a chance, I “nerd out” with my old pal, Super Mario! If you pay attention, you’ll actually see me playing nintendo wii in an upcoming episode in some of our time off.
