Vixen, the New Superhero

Today at the Television Critics Association press tour, CW’s boss Mark Pedowitz announced that CW Seed’s animated series “Vixen” was renewed for a second season.

It was also confirmed that Megalyn Echikunwoke, the actress that voices Mari McCabe aka Vixen in the animated series, is also set to have a live-action debut on Arrow later this season. Mark also teased that a female-led superhero show could make its way to the schedule, even adding that: “Vixen, which is the animated piece, is a superhero of diversity and color. Hopefully that character can spin itself out — if not, join the Legends (Of Tomorrow).”

For those who don’t know, Vixen is an animated web series that aired on CW Seed a couple of months ago. Produced by Marc Guggenheim (Arrow, Legends of Tomorrow) and directed by James Tucker (Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox), the series introduces Mari Jiwe McCabe to the same universe that the TV shows Arrow and The Flash already share. And here are some of the reasons why you should totally watch this show.

  • After her parents are murdered in Africa, Mari McCabe discovers an old family totem that allows her to access the power of any animal by using its magic. And when you have the strength of an elephant, the speed of a cheetah or the agility of a monkey, the only logical thing to do is use those amazing powers to protect the innocent from any kind of threat, right? Right.
  • Since the show is set in the same universe as Star and Central City, Vixen also features some of our favorite actors voicing the animated version of their characters. Oliver Queen/The Arrow (Stephen Amell) and Barry Allen/The Flash (Grant Gustin) chase Mari around town; and Cisco Ramon (Carlos Valdes) makes an appearance, as well.
  • You get to see plenty of magic -watching Mari discover her own powers is a lot of fun. But more than that, you also get to see both Barry and Oliver be taken by surprise -something that almost never happens!- because of Mari’s powers. They don’t know how to deal with her, and their reaction to this fact is hilarious.

Check out the trailer below and give this show a chance, after all, the first season is only 30 minutes long!
