5 Questions ‘Umbrella Academy’ Season 2 Needs To Answer

Netflix finally dropped the highly anticipated first season of Umbrella Academy and it’s just as good and eclectic as the comics of the same name from Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá.
If you’ve been living under a rock, here’s what you need to know about the show:
On the same day in 1989, forty-three infants are inexplicably born to random, unconnected women who showed no signs of pregnancy the day before. Seven are adopted by Sir Reginald Hargreeves, a billionaire industrialist, who creates The Umbrella Academy and prepares his “children” to save the world. But not everything went according to plan. In their teenage years, the family fractured and the team disbanded. Now, the six surviving thirty-something members reunite upon the news of Hargreeve’s passing. Luther, Diego, Allison, Klaus, Vanya and Number Five work together to solve a mystery surrounding their father’s death. But the estranged family once again begins to come apart due to their divergent personalities and abilities, not to mention the imminent threat of a global apocalypse.
There’s a lot to love about the first season. It doesn’t follow the typical forumla of a superhero drama. The characters are weird and unconventional yet dynamic and lively. Each character has a unique relationship with the others, which means there is a lot to unpack within each relationship; this always kept me wanting to know more and see characters we hadn’t see interact yet do so. The music choices are exceptional and flawlessly integrated into the episodes. While the show definitely has some flaws, it’s overall a particularly strong first showing.
But it ended on a major cliffhanger and has not been picked up for a second season at the time this article is written. With that being said, here are 5 questions (and 2 bonus questions) that I would like to see a potential season 2 answer:
How will Vanya control her powers?
Season one ends with all of the siblings traveling through time to escape the apocalypse Vanya caused by aiming her surge of power at the moon, causing it to explode. Although Luther is hesitant at first about taking Vanya with them, Five tells him that Vanya will always cause the apocalypse unless they fix her. Will they be able to successfully “fix” Vanya? And how will they do so with presumably no resources like the medication she was on for most of her life? Does Vanya even need to be “fixed”? Or is she beyond help? And on Vanya’s side, will she be able to forgive her siblings for not just locking her in the soundproof chamber but for also isolating her for most of their lives? So many questions, so many theories.
How did Ben die?
Once Ben started popping up as a consistent part of Klaus’ conscious, I figured it would be no time at all before we learned how number six died. However, the end of season one has come and gone and we still don’t have answers about what happened.
I, for one, have so many questions surrounding Ben: Was Ben’s death an accident or was it murder? How old was he when he passed? More importantly, now that the entire group is traveling through time, can they go back and save Ben? Or is there a reason Ben has to stay dead? I know Ben’s presence was something that showrunner Steve Blackman added as Ben’s death is never really addressed in the comics. But I feel like we spent too much time with “him” in the first season for them not to dive deeper into this in season two.
Will Allison and Luther end up together?
I know this relationship has been quite a controversial topic on the Internet ever since the show’s release. Allison and Luther aren’t biologically related, but seeing as they’ve been raised as siblings, many see the “relationship” as a bit incestuous. On the one hand, I can definitely see why people see this as incestuous. Adopted siblings are just as much a part of a family as biological siblings and to say otherwise is just stupid. But on the other hand, while Allison and Luther do consider themselves “siblings”, they also weren’t raised in a normal family environment. They were raised more like schoolmates or like they were orphans at the same orphanage.
But season one made it clear that these two are in love and that these feelings aren’t going away any time soon. So now the question is: will they throw caution to the wind and finally be together or will they actively decide not to act on their feelings, for fear that it might ruin the family dynamic? Personally, I really like the Allison/Luther relationship (his goodbye speech to Allison’s daughter that also doubled as him revealing his feelings for Allison gave me ALL THE FEELS) and I fall into the second camp when it comes to how I justify the relationship. However, I think the writers are going to make this a little bit of a slow burn. I think if we ever get a payoff to this, it’ll be much further down the road.
What happened to the other 36 babies?
The series opens by telling us that 43 babies were born on the same day to women who hadn’t been pregnant when the day started. Sir Reginald got his hands on seven of them, which means that there are 36 other people out there who are all loosely collected to our core 7. Do they all have extraordinary capabilities? Do the core 7 even know that 36 others were born on the same day as them? Does Leonard Peabody technically count as one of the other 36? I’d love for them to somehow dive a little deeper into this in season 2.
Where did Hazel and Agnes go?
Aside from our core 7, the only other people to survive the apocalypse are Hazel and Agnes, who teleport somewhere. When and where did they go? And how did they get there? These are all questions that I assume will be answered in season two, should it ever get greenlit by Netflix.
Bonus Questions:
Will Claire come back from the dead?
I know it’s likely that Allison’s daughter, Claire, is gone for good after being destroyed by the apocalypse. But the sap in me just wants them to find a way to bring her back, just so she can finally meet her uncles and aunt. Imagine the bonding time between her and Luther, and the scenes where Klaus and Claire are getting in to all kinds of antics — my heart is already melting just thinking about it.
What happened to Mr. Puddles?
I know it’s more of a running joke than anything else, but seriously y’all: what happened to Mr. Puddles?
What do you guys think will happen in season 2 of Umbrella Academy? Agree or disagree with any of my theories? Did you enjoy season 1? Let me know in the comments below!
