Going into the season four finale of Legends of Tomorrow, the writing was on the wall that sacrifices would have to be made. But one Legend did not make it back on the Waverider.

Monday’s finale saw Nora travel to Hell to save not only Constantine but Ray’s soul as well. They enlist the help of Astra to break into Neron’s vault to retrieve Ray’s soul, but in order for that to happen, Neron would need to kill Nate. This would break the deal Ray made and free him for good.

Elsewhere, the Legends failed to stop Neron again and went back to square one. They came up with a plan to build HayWorld theme park and stop Neron from feeding on the public’s fears, which only makes him stronger. Sara and Nate gather a crowd inside the tent to put on a big show but then Neron and Tabatha show up with a massive dragon.

This scares the people, feeding into the demon’s powers. Sara and the Legends get into a fight with Tabatha but with Sara cornered, a Young Zari comes to save the day. Constantine and Neron go head-to-head in the final battle. Neron opened the gates to Hell but that was shut the minute he killed Constantine.

However, that was not Constantine that Neron killed. It was actually Nate in disguise and with that, Ray’s soul was freed, leaving Constantine to finish the job and banish the demon for good. Zari left the safe space of the Waverider and worked to bring back Nate with a sing-along to James Taylor’s “Sweet Baby James”.

It was truly the most bizarre thing I’ve ever seen on this show, but it worked. The people’s fear turned into hope, which brought Nate back to life. However, this all came at a cost. Because the Legends were successful in defeating Neron, the public never feared metas, which means that Zari’s brother was not being killed by ARGUS. This also means that Zari never met the Legends or joined the team. Basically, she was erased from existence in that time period.

However, don’t get too sad. Tala Ashe, who plays Zari, will be returning to the show. TVLine spoke to showrunner Phil Klemmer, who confirmed that Ashe won’t be the same Zari we’ve seen.
