‘The Photograph’ Trailer Released

The trailer for Stella Meghie’s romantic drama The Photograph, starring the wonderful Issa Rae and charming Lakeith Stanfield, is here and I’m SO excited.
In the movie, Issa Rae plays Mae Morton, the daughter of a famous photographer Christina Eames, who dies unexpectedly after a distant relationship they’ve had. This brings Mae to be angry but then finds an old black and white photograph hidden in a box that might be the answers she’s been looking for all along, especially about her mother’s past.
She meets Lakeith Stanfield’s Michael Block, a journalist writing about her mother’s career. While they team up to figure out Christina’s past, they find themselves falling in love with each other and going through the motions that that journey entails.
From the trailer, it seems that The Photograph depicts what a lot of us want more of from movies centered around Black love: quality. It’s more of a romantic drama than a romantic comedy and certainly isn’t centered around trauma, destruction, and just all around sadness that is often shown in Black films. Most went into this trailer expecting it to have a sour turn of creepiness and turn into a horror/murder/whodunit kind of movie, but it’s far from that.
We need more Black romance movies that are pure, beautiful and authentic to its core because everyone deserved to be seen.

The Photograph hits theaters Valentine’s Day 2020.
