“Brown Girls” Joins Freeform Comedy Slate

Freeform has added a new comedy to its slate, and will be bringing a new dynamic duo to our screens. The network has given the green light to “Brown Girls,” a pilot from writers Shilpi Roy and Nastaran Dibai.

The show centers on the relationship between Rimmi, an Indian-American aspiring beauty vlogger, and Devi, a young woman who has recently emigrated from India. Brought together by family, Rimmi and Devi instantly clash over their different views on modern life and love while slowly realizing they both have something to learn from one another. “Brown Girls” is written by co-executive producer Shilpi Roy (“Hipsterhood”) and executive producer Nastaran Dibai (“Malibu Country,” “According to Jim”), and is executive produced by Tracy Katsky, Aaron Kaplan, and Dana Honor.

Roy took to Twitter to express her excitement for her latest creation.

The show looks to combine “funny” and “real,” as it explores new territory for television. Karey Burke, Freeform’s executive vice president, Programming & Development said in a statement, “We love this odd couple comedy not just because it is a sophisticated, funny show but we are thrilled to tell a story about a part of the American experience that isn’t really on TV today.”

According to Deadline, “Brown Girls” will be the third time Kaplan and Dibai have collaborated on a show. The duo first teamed up on single-camera comedy Follow Your Heart at ABC in 2014 and multi-camera Funny In Farsi, also at ABC, in 2009.

“Brown Girls” is a multi-camera comedy that joins Freeform’s recently announced pilot slate including, single-camera comedy “Alone Together,” magazine drama “Issues” and mermaid thriller “The Deep.”
