Where Are The Members of the Midnight Society Now?

On October 31, 1991, Nickelodeon launched a series that would make many a tween-aged horror fans afraid of the dark for years to come. The show—which was appropriately called Are You Afraid of the Dark?—followed a group of teenagers who called themselves The Midnight Society. Every Saturday night, they would gather around a campfire, and each member would take a turn regaling the gathering, and the audience, with a spine-tingling tale about lonely ghosts, vengeful witches, evil clowns or some other sort of scary entity.
It’s been almost twenty-four years since the Midnight Society’s first campfire was lit and its members have long since gone their separate ways. But where did they go? What have they been doing since the Midnight Society disbanded for its last time? Lucky for all of you, I took the time to find out! Submitted for the approval of Talk Nerdy with Us, I call this one: “Where Are They Now? The ‘Are You Afraid of the Dark’ Edition.”
Ross Hull (Gary)
Hull played the bespectacled leader of the Midnight Society and the older brother of Tucker, their youngest member. After the show ended, Hull went on to star in several low-key shows and movies, including Ready or Not, Due South and Fearless. In 2000, he resumed his role as Gary for a three-episode arc on the “Are You Afraid of the Dark?’ reboot. He also guest starred on Mutant X and Stargate: Atlantis before finally landing a job as—of all things—a weather anchor on Canadian television.
Jodie Resther (Kiki)
Resther played Kiki, the tomboy of the group who always seemed to be angry about something and who had an affinity for bandanas. Post-Are You Afraid of the Dark, she signed on to do the voice of Francine on the PBS cartoon Arthur. From 2005-2009, she voiced the character Tecna on the cartoon Winx Club. In addition, she has been actively pursuing a career in music; in 2000, she released an R&B album titled Real, and then later released a French language record called Ma Dualite on the DEJA Musique label. She has not released any new projects for a while, however.
Jacob Tierney (Eric)
Tierney, who played the cocky and often antagonistic Eric, went on to have quite an interesting career after he left the show in the middle of season 2. In addition to doing guest spots on shows like Big Wolf on Campus, Touched by an Angel and Slings and Arrows, he has also done directing, screenwriting and producing on projects such as The Trotsky, Good Neighbors and the upcoming film Lovesick.
Raine Pare-Coull (Betty Ann)
Betty Anne was always my favorite member of The Midnight Society because she told the best stories. My favorite of hers was “The Doll Maker,” which still gives me chills. Sadly, however, the actress who played her didn’t have much of a career after the show ended. In 2006, she guest-starred on The Morgan Waters Show as Petra, but since then, she’s done nothing.
Daniel DeSanto (Tucker)
Who could forget Tuck, Gary’s annoying younger brother? DeSanto has had quite the career the show came to a close. In 2004, he played the character Jason in the hit movie Mean Girls. From 2001-2005, he voiced the character Ray/Rei on the TV series Beyblade. He’s also guest-starred on several TV shows, including Aaron Stone, Rookie Blue and Lost Girl, and did a several-episode stint on the TV show Combat Hospital. Not bad, Tuck, not bad!
Nathaniel Moreau (David)
The shy and sensitive David, played by Nathaniel Moreau, always told some of the most intriguing stories, such as “The Tale of the Dark Dragon.” However, after Are You Afraid of the Dark?, it looks like Moreau left acting behind and decided to pursue another career. The last role he played was Young Peter Cain on Kung Fu: The Legend Continues from 1991-1996. After that, it’s a total mystery.
Jason Alisharan (Frank)
Jason Alisharan, who played Frank, also virtually disappeared from acting. After he left Are You Afraid of the Dark in its fifth season, he played Scott in the 1996 TV movie The Halfback of Notre Dame and then guest-starred as Kyle on Breaker High in 1998. In 2009, he co-produced the drama A Single Man starring Colin Firth and Julianne Moore.
Codie Wilbee (Stig)
Like a few of the others, Codie Wilbee, who played the repulsive Stig from season 5 on, disappeared after the show ended. There literally is nothing on him after that. It’s like he disappeared off of the face of the earth.
Rachel Blanchard (Kristen)
Here is the first of our success stories! After playing Kristen on Are You Afraid of the Dark, she played Cher Horowitz on the TV show Clueless. She also played Roxanne Richardson for multiple seasons on 7th Heaven. In addition, she’s starred in multiple movies, including Road Trip, Without a Paddle, Snakes on a Plane, Open House and Dark House. She recently played Kitty Nygaard on the first season of Fargo.
Joanna Garcia Swisher (Sam)
Last but certainly not least, we have Joanne Garcia (now Joanne Garcia Swisher), who played Sam on Are You Afraid of the Dark , and who is the second of our success stories. After leaving the show in 1996, she went on to play Hallie in Party of Five, Vicki Appleby in Freaks and Geeks, Cheyenne Hart-Montgomery on Reba, Megan Smith on Privileged, Bree Bradley on Gossip Girl, Mia Putney on Better With You, Dr. Nina Greene on Royal Pains, Ariel on Once Upon a Time and Betty Grissom on The Astronaut Wives Club. She also recently played Megan in the movie The Internship. She is currently filming a new comedy called Fist Fight.
