With a spooky release date of Friday the 13th, a strong production company in  Blumhouse Productions, a slew of veteran-of creepy-things cast (Tyler Posey, Lucy Hale), and an interesting premise, Truth or Dare has all of the ingredients to make a delicious horror film. Unfortunately for me, the movie left me with a bad taste in my mouth.

When a group of friends decide to take a Spring Break trip to Mexico, they end up getting caught in a deadly game of Truth or Dare. The friends work their way through the challenges with the threat that each and every one of them could die at any minute without really taking a breath to reflect on the hoops they are being forced through. They move on very quickly from the horrible things that happen to them which, in retrospect, leaves the audience not caring about their friendship as a whole or even each individual character. While the visual scare tactics do not disappoint, every other element that’s supposed to be bone-chillingly scary fails.  In the end, the villain had unclear motives and a weak resolve to get what he or she wanted.

The actors did well with the material they were given. In fact, one of the most enjoyable parts of the movie was seeing them work together. They all seemed to have great chemistry on and off the screen.

Ultimately, Truth or Dare walks a thin line between cliche and senseless. If you’re looking for something to watch that’s going to leave you sleeping just fine at night, then this pseudo-horror movie is perfect for you.
