‘Big Brother 21’ recap: Nominations, a new power, and weird music

Sunday’s episode of Big Brother saw a night of firsts, including the first nominations, a new power, and some very odd music choices.
In case you missed it, here’s what went down in Sunday’s episode.
The group of eight
Sunday’s episode kicks off after Christie won the first Head of Household (HoH), but its what happened after that could determine how the rest of the season plays out. Remember, viewers are watching things that actually took place a little more than a week ago so its time to catch up.
Christie, Jack, Nick, Tommy, Holly, Bella, Jackson, and Analyse formed a new alliance called “gr8ful.” It’s the word “grateful” with “ate” turned into the number 8. It is not that creative. As someone who has watched all 20 seasons of Big Brother and covered the show in other countries, I detest large alliances. Here’s hoping they do not end up controlling the house all season long.
Smell The Power
The first Whacktivity competition of the season took place on Sunday and if you had a good nose, this competition was your strong suit. Kat, Balla, Nicole, Cliff and Ovi all took part and the object of the game was simple: identify the smells in your trash can with the objects outside; the first to do so wins.
Everyone struggled in this one but Ovi correctly identified all three smells and won the competition. His prize was something called the “Nightmare Power”, which allows the holder to wake everyone up in the middle of the night and force the HoH to pick two new nominees after any of the first six nomination ceremonies. As a result, the HoH’s original nominations would then be safe that week. Arguably the best part of the whole thing? Nobody will know who used the power.
Oh no, Ovi!
Well that didn’t take long. It only took 25 minutes of Sunday’s episode for gr8ful to slip up. Ovi overheard talk about an alliance working together and talked to Analyse about it, without knowing she is part of that alliance. She then goes to tell the rest of her group and they immediately start doing anything they can to diffuse this bomb.
Later on, Ovi decides that he wants to take matters into his own hands and form an alliance of his own. He approaches some of the members of gr8ful – unknowingly of course – and tells them he heard about an alliance possibly forming and wants to get his own group together. They all listen to him and play along for now, but this is definitely going to end up biting him in the butt.
First nominations
At the nomination ceremony, Christie nominates Cliff and Kathryn for the first eviction of the season. However, she tells viewers in the Diary Room that she may end up wanting both of them to actually stay this week.
Episode Notes:
- What was that awful outro music that played as the show ended? It seems weird that they would change it out of nowhere like that. Hopefully, it is a one-time thing.
- Speaking of minor changes, there was no introduction credits with the houseguests. Normally, we get them by episode three. I just hope the show doesn’t go the route of Big Brother Canada and cut it out entirely.
